Bay County’s Sports Economy

February 5th, 2009 · No Comments

It’s no doubt that the sports industry plays a large factor in Florida’s economy. Especially after hosting the Superbowl this past weekend in Tampa and with Miami scheduled to host the event next year. But what you may be surprised to find, is that Bay County’s sports industry contributes quite a bit to the local economy as well.

Bay County sports industry brings in about $36 million a year. Over the past ten years, the sports industry has multiplied tremendously. About ten years ago, it only generated around 4,000 rooms a year. Now it brings in 100,000 rooms.

Baseball and fast pitch softball bring in the largest crowds. However, that could soon change. Vice President of Sports Marketing for the Tourist Development Council, Richard Sanders, says sports like cheer leading and gymnastics, beach sports, and triathlons are continuing to grow.

Sanders says even in tough economic times, Bay County’s sports industry is persevering. “A lot of my colleagues throughout the united states has reported figures as much as they’re down 70% in sports events. Every year we’re increasing at 15% clip. Even now.”

Governor Charlie Crist met with sports industry leaders this week to discuss the future of Florida’s sports industry. Sixteen out of 30 teams call the sunshine state their home during spring training season. That brings in more than $450 million and a million and a half visitors each year.

Industry leaders advised Crist not to let lawmakers get too carried away with action on repealing sales tax exemptions. Projections show that the state’s budget will continue to face shortages and lawmakers are considering a review of billions of dollars in exemptions, including one for luxury skyboxes at sports stadiums.

Crist says he’s working to keep the sports industry strong and growing, “I want to keep emphasizing the billions of dollars that has in economic impact in our state…”
